According to the tool used, forgings can be divided into free forging and die forging.
Simply using simple general-purpose tools, or on forging equipment, the method of forming the blank directly at the lower anvil to obtain the desired forging is called free forging. Free forgings can be divided into manual forging, free forging, and forging on hydraulic press according to the type of forging equipment and the nature of the force.
The forging method of deforming the blank with a die to obtain a forging is called die forging. According to its deformation characteristics, die forging can be divided into open forging and closed die forging. According to the different equipment used, die forging can be divided into hammer forging, hot forging, screw press, screw press, die forging on flat forging machine, die forging on hydraulic press, high-speed hammer forging, etc. According to the different precision grades of the forgings produced, die forging can be divided into ordinary die forging and precision die forging.
The forging process is the forging process experienced in the production of a certain forging. For example, the forging process of forgings includes: material preparation, heating, die forging (which can be done on one or more equipment), cutting, punching, heat treatment, pickling, cleaning, and correction.
Which forging method to choose to produce a certain forging depends on many factors such as its shape, size, technical requirements and large batches. Under normal circumstances, single and small batch production is produced by free forging method; large batch production is produced by die forging method. However, some important products such as aviation forgings are often produced by die forging due to the requirements of streamline, performance and consistency of process requirements, although the batch is not large.
Large forgings are generally carried out by free forging due to factors such as equipment tonnage restrictions.
Different types of forgings have different forging processes. For the same forging, different equipment is used for die forging. Due to different equipment characteristics, the die forging process plan is often different.
